00:00.120 --> 00:01.282
This is righteousness.
00:01.463 --> 00:04.829
It's a gift, and Jesus has given it to you.
00:05.370 --> 00:08.162
He has given to you his righteousness.
00:08.604 --> 00:12.216
He has imparted and imputed his righteousness to you.
00:12.517 --> 00:16.772
When God the Father looks at you, he sees the righteousness of Jesus on you.
00:17.073 --> 00:20.544
When you talk to God the Father, he hears you as though it's Jesus talking to him.
00:20.885 --> 00:22.950
So who's more righteous, you or Jesus?
00:24.033 --> 00:28.426
The same Welcome to the City Light Church podcast.

Pastor Boyan Jansik and his team believe that the power of the Holy Spirit is already working in our hearts and minds.
00:52.657 --> 01:02.430
As you listen to today's teaching, remember that you are deeply loved by God, that you are surrounded by his grace and that he has a real hope and a future for you.
01:06.560 --> 01:14.823
We're beginning a new series today Clash of the Covenants, and we're going to slow, marinate, slow cook.
01:16.887 --> 01:34.671
I did not know that moving to Long Island meant that I was obligated Every man I talk to, it seems that I'm under obligation to get a very expensive grill or a slow cooker, a smoker, I guess that's, and I'm thinking it's that time.
01:34.711 --> 01:40.813
You know, mid-40s suburban dad, you can go one of two ways.
01:40.933 --> 01:47.748
No, it's true, you can really become a World War II history buff, or you can really get into smoking, smoking your meats.
01:50.152 --> 01:58.756
So you'll see, that's what happens, and I've learned enough about World War II from my granddad.
01:58.957 --> 02:07.015
So I'm going the slow cooking variety and we're going to slow cook over the course of eight weeks.
02:07.035 --> 02:19.673
New covenant Christianity and new covenant realities, because, after all, we do live under the new covenant, so we should learn the principles of the new covenant, shouldn't we?
02:20.295 --> 02:29.745
How are we really going to experience the fullness of what Jesus has for us and experience true Christianity if we don't understand the covenant that we're operating under?
02:31.129 --> 02:40.909
And we're going to be going through Galatians, because Paul was addressing a problem, and the problem was the Galatian church mixing covenants.
02:41.450 --> 02:44.061
They were mixing the old covenant with the new.
02:44.602 --> 03:08.028
Interestingly enough, that wasn't just a first century phenomenon to this day, because the new covenant is so radical In fact Paul says it's hard to understand, he even calls it a mystery and it's just so mind blowing and it's so counterintuitive to everything, from how we were raised by our parents, how we were raised by society.
03:08.108 --> 03:09.693
The whole system we grew up in.
03:10.581 --> 03:24.687
It's counterintuitive to that so it doesn't really click unless we get enough word in us and then the Holy Spirit can work with that word and then he apocalyptos, he pulls back the curtain, he reveals the truth of grace and the truth of living under grace.
03:25.689 --> 03:41.049
So people are still mixing and the word of the Lord is stop mixing, stop taking a little bit of the old covenant, a little bit of the new, putting it together and coming up with your own covenant, which is how I believe the vast majority of the church lives.
03:42.154 --> 03:44.783
But we're going to live under the fullness of the new Amen.
03:46.327 --> 03:52.563
So we're going to begin Galatians and there's no better way to begin Galatians than by turning to the book of Luke.
03:52.964 --> 03:53.425
Amen.
03:53.886 --> 03:57.414
Let's go to the book of Luke, chapter 9, verse 51.
03:59.440 --> 04:07.684
Now it came to pass, when the time had come for him to be received up, that he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.
04:07.704 --> 04:08.806
This is speaking of Jesus.
04:10.149 --> 04:16.874
And they sent messengers before his face and as they went they entered a village of the Samaritans to prepare for him.
04:18.359 --> 04:23.309
But they did not receive him because his face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.
04:23.891 --> 04:25.534
So note that Jesus was rejected.
04:27.141 --> 04:28.908
He was rejected even before the cross.
04:29.350 --> 04:39.471
Sometimes the gospels read like a highlight reel, from miracle to miracle to miracle, but if you just look a little bit deeper you'll see that salt and pepper throughout the highlight reel is a lot of rejection.
04:40.856 --> 04:42.581
So don't feel bad if ever you're rejected.
04:44.105 --> 04:45.909
He said the servant is not above his master.
04:45.969 --> 04:47.593
They hated me, they'll hate you.
04:49.520 --> 04:53.171
So he gets rejected by the Samaritans because he was on his way to Jerusalem.
04:54.520 --> 05:04.174
And when his disciples, james and John, saw this, they said Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?
05:04.756 --> 05:07.403
Lol, right, wow, wow.
05:07.503 --> 05:09.508
What an extreme thought to have.
05:10.230 --> 05:12.275
But these were old covenant people.
05:13.317 --> 05:19.511
All they knew was the old covenant and, by the way, this is how God dealt with sin under the old covenant.
05:20.012 --> 05:25.238
When you were judged, it wasn't a slap on the wrist, it was the ground splitting open and swallowing you up.
05:25.559 --> 05:28.792
It was fire from heaven, it was pestilence, it was a plague.
05:29.154 --> 05:31.802
There was one verdict guilty, and the punishment was death.
05:33.106 --> 05:34.649
The wages of sin is death.
05:35.070 --> 05:43.921
That's the old covenant and they're just thinking and talking in line with what they've read and with what they've experienced living under the old covenant.
05:44.703 --> 05:45.785
Here's what Jesus says.
05:46.947 --> 05:53.426
But he turned and rebuked them and said you do not know what manner of spirit you are of.
05:54.990 --> 05:57.356
You don't know that I'm bringing in a new spirit.
05:58.098 --> 05:59.621
I'm bringing in a new covenant.
06:00.363 --> 06:10.465
I'm bringing in a new dispensation, a different set of principles that this whole world, the entirety of the world, will be under.
06:11.247 --> 06:12.329
You're of a different spirit.
06:12.890 --> 06:14.634
You're of an old covenant spirit.
06:16.780 --> 06:22.204
You know where else you'll see Jesus saying something similar with the woman at the well who happened to be a Samaritan.
06:23.348 --> 06:30.331
They were upset with him, with Jesus here, because he was going to Jerusalem and they didn't want to go to Jerusalem.
06:30.592 --> 06:33.804
The woman at the well says which mountain should we worship at?
06:33.844 --> 06:37.942
The Jews say worship at this mountain, and she was talking about Sinai, right at Jerusalem.
06:39.405 --> 06:40.728
But we worship at this mountain.
06:40.829 --> 06:41.570
So which one is it?
06:41.691 --> 06:43.843
See, she's thinking all physical, all natural.
06:43.883 --> 06:44.766
Where should we worship?
06:44.786 --> 06:45.267
Which mountain?
06:45.528 --> 06:53.909
And he goes listen, dear, the day is coming, you'll neither worship at this mountain or that mountain, but the true worshipers will worship me in spirit and in truth.
06:53.969 --> 07:01.155
What's he saying Under the new covenant, empowered by the Holy Spirit, in spirit and in truth.
07:01.876 --> 07:20.471
So, before we begin with Galatians, I'm just going to ask Pastor James to come up and show you what I believe is one of the most important pages in the entire Bible, something that I really want you to read over and over again and really let this sink down deep into your spirit.
07:21.053 --> 07:23.039
These pages are hidden in the Bible.
07:23.079 --> 07:26.727
Many of you have never taken a good long look and ponder the significance of them.
07:28.390 --> 07:41.908
Right at the end of Malachi excuse me for the Italian Americans, malachi Sandwiched in between the last page of Malachi and the first page of Matthew, is this blank page.
07:43.551 --> 07:45.675
You ever wonder what's happening here.
07:46.320 --> 07:47.402
There is a change.
07:48.124 --> 07:53.440
We're moving from old covenant to new covenant and you cannot mix the two together.
07:53.734 --> 07:57.304
Pick one, pick one and live in that one.
07:57.597 --> 08:03.069
Now, before you make your choice, let me explain the difference between the covenants.
08:03.850 --> 08:12.772
Under the old covenant, which I said earlier was a dispensation Don't get lost in a fancy theological term, a dispensation simply means a system of order.
08:13.260 --> 08:15.910
Picture a big umbrella over all of humanity.
08:16.432 --> 08:21.948
And this is how, underneath that umbrella, under that particular dispensation, these are the principles.
08:22.288 --> 08:36.871
This is how God will relate to man Under the old covenant umbrella, under the old covenant system of order, under the old covenant dispensation, man endeavored to get approval from God.
08:37.592 --> 08:49.544
Man endeavored to be declared righteous based on their own self effort, their own self discipline, their own law, keeping their own good behavior Notice.
08:49.644 --> 08:52.250
I said man endeavored to be made righteous.
08:52.450 --> 08:55.563
Man was never made righteous Impossible.
08:56.245 --> 08:58.653
Couldn't be made righteous through his own self effort.
08:59.135 --> 08:59.416
Why?
08:59.917 --> 09:05.470
Because when you break the law in just one part, you're guilty of breaking the entirety of the law.
09:06.312 --> 09:09.064
There is no A minus on the test.
09:10.688 --> 09:12.392
You either get an A or an F.
09:14.016 --> 09:16.201
And if you just mess up once what a terrible burden.
09:16.842 --> 09:19.969
You mess up once, you're guilty of breaking the entirety of the law.
09:22.053 --> 09:26.583
You're a sinner Under the new covenant.
09:27.204 --> 09:29.289
That's another dispensation, another umbrella.
09:30.251 --> 09:52.070
Under the new covenant, you're declared righteous, which means you have right standing with God, not based on your self effort, not based on your good behavior, not based on you trying to cross every T and dot every I, but it's all based not on what you do, but on what Jesus has already done for you.
09:52.971 --> 09:55.155
Hallelujah, amen.
09:55.960 --> 10:01.332
And under the new covenant, jesus kept the entirety of the law, fully and perfectly.
10:01.752 --> 10:03.382
He got an A plus on the test.
10:04.044 --> 10:16.704
And when you say, jesus, I receive you to be my Lord and my savior, he takes your name, crosses his out, erases it on that A plus paper, puts your name in and says go ahead, hand this in to your parents.
10:17.305 --> 10:18.608
Hand, show this to your father.
10:20.051 --> 10:21.014
He'll be real proud.
10:22.021 --> 10:27.498
He did all the work, kept the law perfectly and then passed the benefit over to you.
10:27.819 --> 10:38.029
If you'll receive it by faith and only look to him and when you only look to him, you cannot add anything to his already finished work it's Jesus plus.
10:38.190 --> 10:39.994
Nothing equals everything.
10:41.197 --> 10:46.728
Religion then comes in and says well, jesus plus I mean we got to get some stuff out of you.
10:46.808 --> 10:54.268
So Jesus plus regular church attendance, jesus plus getting baptized, jesus plus tithing.
10:54.608 --> 11:00.189
No, all those things are good things, but they don't help as far as your salvation is concerned.
11:00.630 --> 11:10.879
Your salvation is free, and when you really understand the significance of your salvation, nobody has to wag a finger at you telling you what you need to do.
11:10.979 --> 11:13.420
You, from the inside out, are empowered.
11:13.520 --> 11:19.856
It's not just that you want to live pleasing to the Lord, but now you're empowered to live pleasing to the Lord.
11:20.337 --> 11:20.959
See the law.
11:20.980 --> 11:24.954
It places a demand on people touch not, taste not, you cannot.
11:25.356 --> 11:27.845
But you never get the power to fulfill the obligation of the law.
11:28.408 --> 11:31.963
So you're always frustrated, which is why people want to stay away from church.
11:32.184 --> 11:32.766
I don't blame them.
11:33.027 --> 11:35.036
They think it's an epicenter of frustration.
11:35.458 --> 11:38.449
I'm just going to be told a bunch of things that I can't do.
11:38.890 --> 11:40.817
I can fulfill and frankly I don't want to.
11:41.258 --> 11:47.916
So peace out, I'm out of there, when real new covenant Christianity is the exact opposite.
11:48.878 --> 11:52.626
So let's just begin Galatians by noting there is a difference between the covenants.
11:52.727 --> 11:53.107
Why?
11:54.430 --> 11:57.503
Because the cross of Jesus changed everything.
11:58.065 --> 12:00.691
Jesus changed everything.
12:01.594 --> 12:10.637
John the Baptist said behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, that whole sin problem that was in the world.
12:11.098 --> 12:26.090
Jesus on the cross took it away and it's because of his blood that we could live under a covenant, under a dispensation, not of the law but of grace, amen.
12:26.571 --> 12:29.922
Let's begin in Galatians, chapter one, martin Luther.
12:30.784 --> 12:35.554
He used to call Galatians by the name of his wife because he said I'm married to it.
12:37.501 --> 12:37.862
I wouldn't.
12:38.504 --> 12:44.140
I mean it's cool, move on, martin Luther.
12:44.160 --> 12:50.654
But, han, no other human or epistle or entity shall be called by thy name.
12:52.538 --> 12:59.917
But just showing how much it meant to him, it's been called the declaration of independence of Christian liberty.
13:01.039 --> 13:19.246
So let's begin in Galatians, chapter one, and we're going to go verse by verse, smashing the idols of legalism, the idols of pride, and receiving the free gift of righteousness.
13:20.670 --> 13:31.474
Paul, an apostle, not for men or through man, but through Jesus Christ and God, the Father, who raised him from the dead, and all the brethren who are with me, to the churches of Galatia.
13:32.717 --> 13:36.197
Grace, he outlines with that one word.
13:36.330 --> 13:52.700
The theme of the entire epistle is gonna be grace, grace to you and peace from God, the Father and our Lord, jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us from this present evil age.
13:53.450 --> 13:58.595
Note that you're delivered from the power of darkness, not the presence of darkness.
14:00.850 --> 14:04.996
You're delivered out of the power of this evil age, but you're still living in an evil age.
14:06.550 --> 14:11.057
Psalm 23, he prepares a table before you in the presence of your enemies.
14:11.890 --> 14:14.253
You're gonna be feasting, but not too far.
14:14.353 --> 14:27.472
Is the enemies of God looking on, by the way, when the Psalms, psalms 23, says when Psalms 23 says he prepares a table before you in the presence of my enemies.
14:27.513 --> 14:30.477
This is where it's good to know the difference between the old and new covenant.
14:31.090 --> 14:37.234
Under the old, david is writing it, he's literally talking about other military people who were after his life.
14:38.210 --> 14:43.599
I mean, it could mean that and it can still mean that, but everything under the old covenant was physical.
14:43.730 --> 14:45.176
Under the new covenant and spiritual.
14:45.290 --> 14:57.516
So when you read Psalm 23, don't think about your coworker, who you think is your enemy, and you're praying oh God, cause me to eat lavishly and they'll just watch muah.
14:58.190 --> 15:08.995
No, for us, under the new covenant, it's talking about the enemies of God, demonic spirits, and yes, they can operate through people, but we're not trying to stick it to somebody or go into war with people.
15:09.450 --> 15:14.418
We're eating lavishly, but the demonic spirits are still looking on because it's not fully their time yet.
15:15.530 --> 15:24.437
Shadrach, meshach and Abednego God didn't deliver them from the furnace, he delivered them from the fire in the furnace.
15:25.130 --> 15:28.296
You're delivered from the power of your enemies, but not from the presence of your enemies.
15:28.850 --> 15:34.357
Incidentally, this is why it's so important for us to go through this series and really understand the difference of the covenants.
15:36.194 --> 15:43.638
Another example is and there's many, many scriptures like this in the Old Testament here's one the Lord, god, is a Son and shield.
15:44.290 --> 15:45.716
The Lord will give grace and glory.
15:46.570 --> 15:50.134
No good thing will he withhold from those who walk up.
15:50.175 --> 15:50.476
Rightly.
15:51.210 --> 15:52.255
Phenomenal verse, right.
15:53.870 --> 15:54.995
I have a problem with it, though.
15:55.610 --> 16:03.178
If I don't understand grace, I'm gonna see that the fulfillment of that verse is conditional on me walking up rightly.
16:04.150 --> 16:07.918
So I really need a breakthrough, I need the Lord, and I find this beautiful verse so generous.
16:08.010 --> 16:10.298
The Lord will give grace and glory.
16:12.870 --> 16:16.573
By the way, when it says glory in that verse, what do you think of?
16:20.791 --> 16:22.176
Somebody there shouted money.
16:28.630 --> 16:33.800
He had the hoodie on and everything and then, like a Jedi movie, he removes the hoodie.
16:35.510 --> 16:36.234
That was me.
16:38.310 --> 16:39.013
He shouted money.
16:40.010 --> 16:43.695
Can you believe that we have such carnal Christians at City Light Church?
16:45.090 --> 16:46.233
So why is it always about?
16:46.895 --> 16:47.536
It's about money.
16:49.180 --> 16:59.473
He's right, just like he was, about the type of wood in Noah's Ark and corrected me and called it the word glory.
16:59.513 --> 17:01.892
We often mean like the glories of God, and what do you think of?
17:01.932 --> 17:11.001
Like golden streams and dust, and it can mean the anointing, but the first use of the word glory was heavy laden.
17:11.850 --> 17:18.821
Abraham had so much stuff that he put the cabode, the heaviness of his treasures, on the beast of burden.
17:20.050 --> 17:24.698
And many times that word glory actually means material provision and sustenance.
17:25.370 --> 17:27.277
The Lord will give grace and glory.
17:27.951 --> 17:30.835
No good thing will he withhold from those who walk up rightly.
17:31.430 --> 17:35.917
And now I read that and I immediately realized oh, that's based on my behavior.
17:36.510 --> 17:37.032
I have to be well.
17:37.052 --> 17:37.633
What does that mean?
17:37.734 --> 17:39.479
Walk up rightly, right?
17:40.070 --> 17:49.917
How are you really gonna have confidence and claim that verse as your own when there's that little part in the end those who walk up rightly, well, how up rightly?
17:50.190 --> 17:52.898
I mean, if I compare myself to Hitler, I walk up rightly.
17:54.010 --> 17:57.054
If I compare myself to those carnal Christians, I know I walk up rightly.
17:57.790 --> 18:01.120
But if I compare myself to Jesus, I'm not walking up rightly.
18:01.410 --> 18:02.435
So does that mean I miss it?
18:02.570 --> 18:03.434
Can I still claim it?
18:04.030 --> 18:09.981
Well, I've been pretty good this week, but I didn't read the Bible like I think I should.
18:10.190 --> 18:11.294
How much is enough anyway?
18:11.675 --> 18:12.378
Did I pray enough?
18:12.690 --> 18:13.454
Did I witness enough?
18:13.950 --> 18:17.756
And all these insecurities come in and you're robbed of the promise.
18:17.816 --> 18:18.097
Right?
18:18.730 --> 18:20.877
That's how it was under the old covenant.
18:21.970 --> 18:25.856
If you read that and you don't understand the power of the blood of Jesus and you go.
18:26.930 --> 18:27.713
Well, that's me.
18:28.475 --> 18:30.613
I walk up rightly, cause I'm all that.
18:30.914 --> 18:31.617
You just missed it.
18:32.950 --> 18:37.074
All those verses cause you to look out of yourself and look to a savior.
18:37.870 --> 18:46.919
So under the new covenant, you have been made upright, you have been declared righteous, you have right, standing with God.
18:47.510 --> 19:07.154
So whenever you read throughout the Old Testament, these conditional promises there's so many promises to the righteous, to the one who walks up rightly that's not for us to say, oh well, this week I can't claim that it's been a bad week, and I really exploded on that person on the LIE, and I gesticulated to them and sign language, if you know what I mean.
19:07.670 --> 19:08.452
And so I really.
19:10.959 --> 19:19.434
No, I didn't do that, I'm just giving examples here, just like three people going, mm-hmm, this isn't confession therapy time for me, I'm just giving examples.
19:20.374 --> 19:22.487
I'm just giving examples.
19:22.507 --> 19:22.970
You can't do that.
19:23.050 --> 19:29.894
But you read that and you say, god, I don't walk up rightly, in and of myself I lack, but because of you, jesus, you have made me righteous.
19:30.710 --> 19:35.435
You have forever cemented me in the upright before God position.
19:36.330 --> 19:41.335
All my sins, all your sins, past, present and future have been taken out of the way.
19:41.690 --> 19:47.752
Now guess what you have Confidence, and that's a major theme of grace Boldness.
19:48.495 --> 19:52.879
That's why the Bible says the righteous are as bold as a lion.
19:54.190 --> 20:00.819
Now, if you're looking at yourself, you're not gonna be too bold unless you're really given over to pride.
20:01.650 --> 20:08.598
And there are some people that are so blinded all they can see is the good things in themselves and the bad in everyone else, and they think that in and of themselves they're righteous.
20:08.690 --> 20:09.011
They're not.
20:10.090 --> 20:12.738
Jesus showed up, he'd expose that in a second.
20:13.810 --> 20:17.895
But no, we're to not look at ourselves, we look to Jesus, and that's how the promise is fulfilled.
20:18.477 --> 20:22.556
Hallelujah, according to the will of our God and Father.
20:22.757 --> 20:27.958
Verse five to whom be glory forever and ever.
20:28.500 --> 20:28.801
Amen.
20:30.230 --> 20:37.241
Verse six he says I marvel that you are turning away so soon from him.
20:41.670 --> 20:44.932
What was happening in this Galatian church Cause right now?
20:45.033 --> 20:48.113
This is Paul and he's not happy, he's upset.
20:48.153 --> 20:50.274
You know what's missing In the first five verses?
20:50.334 --> 20:50.675
We're ready.
20:50.695 --> 20:59.938
In verse six, we're missing charismatic, socially correct Paul who comes in and when he writes the letter, all the other letters he first praises them.
21:00.430 --> 21:01.796
He tells them how good they're doing.
21:02.090 --> 21:03.997
You can feel his affection for them.
21:04.510 --> 21:04.791
He doesn't.
21:04.811 --> 21:06.496
He skips all that and he's upset.
21:07.710 --> 21:08.353
He's upset, he's going.
21:08.473 --> 21:12.475
You're turning, not from a doctrine, not from a teaching, you're turning away from him.
21:12.890 --> 21:14.556
So what was happening to the Galatians?
21:15.250 --> 21:18.660
Well, this group called the Judaizers had snuck in.
21:19.390 --> 21:29.081
Imagine it's the first century, the apostle Paul is turning the whole world upside down with the gospel and this Aryan Galatia got saved.
21:29.570 --> 21:31.197
And then Paul goes on another missionary journey.
21:31.510 --> 21:41.195
While Paul is gone, judaizers snuck in, and you know what their message was it's good that you believe in Jesus as the Messiah, as the Son of God we do too.
21:41.870 --> 21:46.018
But in order for you to be saved, you have to keep the entirety of the Levitical Law.
21:46.410 --> 21:51.855
In fact, the men have to be circumcised, because they were all not Jewish people who became Christian, the men.
21:52.150 --> 21:53.696
So they're putting them back under the law.
21:53.736 --> 21:54.418
What are they doing?
21:54.770 --> 21:56.496
They're mixing the covenants.
21:59.050 --> 22:05.355
And Paul says you're not just turning away from a teaching, you're turning away from Jesus.
